Lt. Governor Guadagno Congratulates New Class of Governor’s STEM Scholars

Congratulating the second class of Governor’s STEM Scholars, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno this morning addressed the program’s Conference on Government and Leadership in Piscataway.

“Congratulations to this year’s class of Governor’s STEM Scholars.  Over the year, you will have the chance to discuss issues impacting STEM education and careers with policymakers, academic leaders & industry professionals,” said Lt. Governor Guadagno.  “You will develop invaluable relationships with your peers and mentors to nurture your own interests into a future career and find ways for our state to meet the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow’s STEM fields.”

Announced in 2013 by Lt. Governor Guadagno, the Governor’s STEM Scholars program is comprised of a highly selective group of students in high school through PhD/MD level with an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Over the course of an academic year, the Scholars meet quarterly with policymakers and academic and industry professionals to discuss issues affecting both STEM education and careers. 

“The Lieutenant Governor has been a strong supporter of the Governor’s STEM Scholars from the day we announced the program and her passion and enthusiasm come through at every event,” said David Hodges, director of the Governor’s STEM Scholars. “I am certain that her visit to the conference and her message to the scholars about STEM in New Jersey will resonate with them for years to come.”

This mentorship and leadership program is overseen by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey and welcomes students who not only excel academically but who seek to become leaders in STEM in New Jersey.  In addition to supporting the academic and career goals of the Scholars, the program provides feedback to the State, policymakers, and the STEM community at large to assist in improving the State’s STEM programs and highlighting STEM as an economic driver.
