GZA GeoEnvironmental Celebrates 50 Years and Partnership with NJIT

The Fairfield office of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., a national multi-disciplined engineering consulting firm, marked the company’s fiftieth year in business with a recent celebratory event at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark.  The event, attended by Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, took place at the Campus Center Atrium and included the announcement of a new collaboration between GZA and NJIT as well as a panel discussion on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Speakers at the event included Kim Guadagno, New Jersey Lieutenant Governor; Joel Bloom, President, NJIT; and William E. Hadge, PE, President and CEO, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.

A discussion on the importance of STEM and its role in New Jersey’s economy and job creation was moderated by Fadi Deek, Provost and Senior Vice President, NJIT.  The panel was comprised of Jonathan Luke, Chair, Department of Mathematical Sciences, NJIT; Laura Overdeck, Founder & President of Bedtime Math; Robert Palermo, PE, Senior Vice President, GZA and Lead Geotechnical Engineer for the new Tappan Zee Bridge; and William Tansey, III, MD, FACC, Cardiologist, Summit Medical Group.

“New Jersey’s legacy of innovation is in safe hands thanks to our commitment to STEM education and connecting classroom work to twenty-first century jobs,” said Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno.  “With each new partnership between academia and industry, we give our students the tools and opportunities to be the innovators of the future.”

GZA’s northern New Jersey office announced a partnership with NJIT that will benefit both organizations.  GZA hopes to expand diversity within its firm, expand its presence within Essex County and provide support and opportunities for NJIT and its students.  As part of the partnership agreement, GZA will:

  • Endow a scholarship for students from Essex County, New Jersey majoring in engineering or environmental sciences.
  • Provide guest lecturers to NJIT
  • Offer summer internships to NJIT students. and
  • Hire NJIT graduates through on-campus recruitment and career days.

“For half a century, GZA GeoEnvironmental has contributed extraordinary engineering talent in service to the nation, helping to create some of our most important infrastructure,” said Joel Bloom, President, NJIT.  “The current era is no exception. Critical projects such as the new Tappan Zee Bridge and the proposed Second Avenue subway are essential to the region’s revitalization.  We could not be more thrilled that our students will be working alongside these exceptional engineers to help design the future of our country.”
