Rutgers’ First Coding Boot Camp Launches in Fall

Rutgers will launch New Jersey’s first-ever coding boot camp in October, a program specifically designed to teach adult learners and part-time students the skills they need for careers in web development, a high-demand area for the digital economy.

The boot camp, a 24-week certificate program offered by Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies to the general public, combines on-campus classes in New Brunswick with online work and will be held two evenings a week and for four hours on Saturday. Enrollment closes October 26 and the first class is scheduled October 27.

With web development skills in great demand, Rutgers educators note the vast career opportunities both within technology companies and beyond for those with requisite training. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the web development field will experience a 20 percent growth rate through 2022, which well outpaces the supply of talent. Employers report demand for more than 100,000 web development positions, according to Burning Glass Technologies, which specializes in job market analytics.

“The goal of Rutgers Coding Boot Camp is to help students make a career jump into a high-demand field that combines the business and technology aspects of the digital economy,” said Richard J. Novak, vice president of continuing studies and distance learning at Rutgers.

“There is a stark need among employers for these skills, and coding boot camps open doors and opportunities for working professionals looking to rapidly retool and recharge career prospects.”

Students will build a portfolio of web applications to showcase their knowledge, skills and products and will be placed into experiential learning opportunities with employers. The boot camp also will offer career-planning services, portfolio review, demo days and recruiting help, Novak added.

The new coding program does not require previous computer programming experience or training. Students may qualify for federal education loans, workforce development grants and other education funding up to the full cost of registration. For qualified applicants, the approval process can be completed online and typically takes less than 15 minutes. Rutgers alumni are eligible for special pricing.
